Technology in Education ED270 April 10, 2015 Photoshop

We did an activity in class where half of the class got the same set of instruction and the other half got a different set of instruction. My side of the room was told to rate the sentences that the teacher reads out loud on how easy it is for us to pronounce them. The other half of the class was told to paint or visualize a picture in their mind about the scenario. At the end of the activity, we had a quiz on how well we remember the sentences that our teacher read out loud. It was obvious that those who painted a picture in their mind had an easier time remembering the sentences compared to my half of the classroom.

Today, we learned about why photos can be useful in the classroom. Photos can be used as a visual aid, used to clearly explain what we are thinking, used to support our presentation, and so many more. Some pictures on the internet, in magazines, or out in the public in general can fool us at times if it looks realistic.

We had to distinguish the differences between the photoshopped picture and the actual picture. In order to figure out, we have to look at close details to figure out if it is fake. Is the arm out of place? Are they in an awkward position? Same lighting? Same background? Same flash circle spot in their eyes? Technology these days can be used to manipulate our minds and cause us to think that the picture was actually taken. For an example, in the People’s magazine, they can photoshop “couples” together and make them look bad. One example that Saxowsky showed us was a picture of a couple that broke up several years ago, but was seen “together” recently at the beach. In reality, there was two pictures of them separately, taken different years, and different locations, but they were merged together into one picture.

TIPS:

JPEG are used for actual photo size, but they have better color and picture quality compared to other picture formats. They also take up less storage space. JPG can be used for any photo size, but lacks in the quality of a photo. Besides the picture quality, they are exactly the same thing and are interchangeable, although Windows requires the three code letter extension, where as Mac doesn’t have a limit.

Pictures on the internet typically have a resolution of 72.

When we scan pictures, we need to increase the resolution to have clearer pictures. If it is a small picture, then a good resolution number would be 300. If you want a small section of the page, then preview the page and select the area that you want to scan.
